This is a vintage circa 20th century pair. They have a piece of wood missing on both sides of the backrest. It's the small pieces on the outside where they've been tucked into the cut in the chair.
It doesn't impact the look of the chair though, as the missing area is not really noticed when the chairs are assembled as you can see by the two pictures of the chairs head on. This pair created in the 20th century, most likely 1960s-1970s.
The Savonarola chair is a type of folding chair with an X frame when viewed from the front or back. It was designed to fold so it was portable and used during campaigns or other outdoor pursuits.
The title Savonarola comes from the name of Italian Renaissance Dominican friar, Girolamo Savonarola, who is renowned for his clash with tyrannical rulers and corrupt clergy. To fold this interestingly beautiful chair you must first remove the back rail which simply slides upward out of slots in the arms, then push the arms together to fold. This pair would make perfect hallway or entryway chairs. Chair size: Height 33.5 inches Width open 25.5 inches Width folded 6.5 inches Depth 20 inches Seat depth 10 inches Seat height 18.5 inches Arm height 28 inches Weight 15 pounds.
